About

3.4 Jean Baptiste is the first-born son of 2.1 Pierre Hogue dit St. Malo and Jeanne Theodore. He and partner Barbe live until an old age for that time. He marries Barbe when he is 24 and she is 18. They have a child soon after. They stay within the confines of New France’s growing Montreal establishment, and not much else is known.

In the Christian tradition at the time, boys have first names of Joseph while girls have first names of Marie — both being the names of Jesus’s parents. The name “Jean” (French for John) is also very common at the time and “Jean Baptiste” was a common variation referencing another popular name from scripture, John the Baptist.

Barbe Coiteux is not the only child of Jacques Coiteux/Coetteux and Barbe Dumets that a Hogue will marry in this generation. 3.4 Jean’s brother 3.7 Francois will marry who we believe to be Barbe’s sister, Marie Angelique. 3.4 Jean’s sister 3.9 Marguerite will marry their brother, Jacques Coiteux, named after their father.

  • Barbe Dumets — “Dumets” spelling is from Ilene Trainor email dated 8 March, 2011. Other variations we show are from the “Grande Bibliotheque Collection Nationale” (GBCN) database in Montreal.
  • Children — All of the above children were found in the “PRDH” database: “b” indicates “baptismal” file, “m” indicates “marriage” file, and “d” indicates “death/burial” file. 4.85 Madeleine is possibly a twin with 4.8 Louis, but a baptismal file has so far not been found. And the date of her death is unclear due to conflicting information on the source documents.
  • Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France). New France became the British Province of Quebec in 1763 after France ceded it in the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years’ War.
