Not much is known about our earliest ancestor. Born in France, Jean marries Nicole Dubus at age 21 while she is about 19. They have one child that we know of.
Jean likely had siblings, and Jean and Nicole likely had more children. Pierre is the only one for whom we found records. Families in the 1600s and 1700s typically consisted of four to six children for various reasons. In Europe, where mortality rates were lower, family size might have been smaller. In the “New World” (Canada and the Americas), they might have been larger as mortality rates were higher (fewer doctors and specialists, further away) and more hands were needed to work fields.

- Nicole Dubus — Ancestry.com lists her death as 4 May, 1664 in Picardie, France (source unknown)
- Children — If there are other children from the marriage of Jean and Nicole, they are unknown at the time of this writing.
- Nicole’s surname — Some sources have Nicole’s surname as “DuBusset.” (Generation 11.32) Marcel decided to use the most commonly used variation of “Dubus” for continuity purposes.
- Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France). See (Generation 11.32) Marcel’s “Introduction” and “Story of Pierre” for additional information. New France became the British Province of Quebec in 1763 after France ceded it in the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years’ War.
